Beyond The Run With Dave December Newsletter

Dear Runners, Dreamers, and Movers,

As the year winds down and the days grow shorter, I’ve been hearing a lot of people say they feel tired, stressed, or even a little lost. If that’s you, I want to start with this simple truth: You’re not alone. And more importantly, you’re still moving forward.

This month, let’s talk about success. Not the kind measured by medals or finish times—though those are great—but the kind that sneaks up on you in the small, quiet moments:

Success is lacing up your shoes when you’d rather stay in bed. It’s showing up for a run and not caring how far or fast you go. Success is listening to your body when it whispers, “I need rest.” It’s setting a goal and chasing it, but also knowing when to pause and breathe. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: If you have a body, you are a runner.

You don’t need a race bib to prove it. You don’t need perfect gear. All you need is the courage to keep moving—whether that’s a mile, a minute, or even just a mental shift toward hope.

So as we close this year, let’s celebrate all the victories: The first steps after injury. The early mornings that felt impossible. The races that didn’t go as planned but taught us something anyway. The simple fact that we showed up—even when life got messy. Running Through the Dark Days December can feel heavy. Long nights. Short days. Deadlines. Holidays. Emotions running high.

But here’s the thing about dark days—they’re the perfect backdrop for light. Remember, even in the darkest times, the smallest light can shine the brightest—guiding us forward, one hopeful step at a time.  When you step outside for a run, whether the sun is shining or it’s barely peeking through the clouds, you’re creating your own light. Every step you take is a spark, reminding you that movement is medicine, even when the world feels overwhelming.

And if you need a little extra push this month, here are 5 ways to keep your light shining bright:

Set Micro-Goals. Don’t think about miles or pace. Think: “I’ll run to the next streetlamp” or “I’ll just get dressed and see how I feel.”

Find Your Crew. Lean on friends, family, or your running group for encouragement—and accountability.

Celebrate Rest. Success isn’t just about pushing forward; it’s also about knowing when to recharge. Recovery is progress, too.

Mix It Up. Try something new—a trail, a treadmill workout, or even just a different playlist—to keep things fresh.

Reflect and Reset. Look back at everything you’ve accomplished this year, big or small. Carry those wins into the new year.

If you’re feeling weighed down this season, remember this: hope doesn’t have to be big to make an impact. It can be as simple as a sunrise on a morning run or the sound of your feet hitting the pavement. It’s in those little moments that we find the strength to keep going.

You are a runner. You are strong. And no matter what this year has thrown at you, you’re still here—still running, still striving, still shining. Keep chasing the light, even when it feels far away. It’s closer than you think. This is about running. This is also not about running. First podcast out in January! Thanks for Subscribing.

Happy Running,

Dave
